During the 1930s Dust Bowl, dust storms wiped out entire farms and forced up to 400,000 families to abandon their land. In response, the U.S. passed the Soil Conservation Act and created the Soil Conservation Service. Farmers began contour-plowing, planting cover crops and windbreaks, restoring topsoil, and rebuilding farmland.
