The emotional press tour for Wicked continues on to awards season as the film hits its digital release. And listen, at this point complaining about Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s displays of sisterhood is tired from anyone who hasn’t shot two films back to back and sung the musical’s iconic songs live.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo weren’t just in sync on the Wicked set— but prior to filming as well. The actresses revealed in an interview with Variety published on Thursday, Jan. 2, that after being hired as the two leads of the film, they worked together to ensure that both of their needs were met on the set.

Cynthia asked the director, Jon M. Chu, if they could “reimagine” Elphaba’s traditionally long, wavy hair as micro braids in the movie.

Grande’s new interview comes over a month after the first Wicked hit theaters Nov. 22, 2024, quickly becoming the top-grossing movie adaptation of a Broadway musical ever. Its sequel, Wicked: For Good, will arrive almost exactly a year later in the fall of 2025.
