California could see Christmastime rain and snow, risking floods and landslides and snarling travel
High amounts of rain are expected for L.A., with 2 to 4 inches on the coast. 'Be prepared for at least some rain around Christmas,' the weather service said.
The NWS notes that tule fog, a special kind of radiation fog, occurs each winter in the Central Valley of California. The Weather Network, a Canadian weather information service, says tule fog is simply radiation fog with a special name. Either way, it's radiation fog that settles in the Central Valley during the year's cooler months.
An unrelenting gloom has blanketed much of the state’s Central Valley since late November. For three weeks, David Mas Masumoto, a peach farmer in California’s San Joaquin Valley, has worked under a dense fog that has blocked nearly all sunshine.
Parts of California are bracing for a series of rain and wind events over the next week as back-to-back atmospheric rivers move through the state.
“This is going to be really bad,” warned former National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) chief scientist and meteorologist Ryan Maue on X, on Wednesday morning, referring to an “ onslaught of atmospheric rivers ” forecast to drench California over the next 10 days.
At the center of the warning is the planned shutdown of two major refineries: Valero’s Benicia facility and Phillips 66’s Los Angeles plant. Together, the closures would eliminate nearly 20% of California’s in-state refining capacity, according to Reps. Vince Fong and Stan Ellis, both Republicans from Bakersfield.
Republicans and the Trump administration are hoping a panel of federal judges in Los Angeles will halt the new Prop. 50 maps from taking effect.
