Crews work to clear I-55, I-22 in North Mississippi of ice
BATESVILLE, Miss. (WJTV) – Officials with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MDPS) said crews are still working to clear parts of Interstates 55 and 22 in North Mississippi after a winter storm moved through the state.
Portions of Interstate 55 and Interstate 22 in Mississippi were closed Wednesday to clear stranded commercial vehicles and ice after a traffic pile up overnight in freezing conditions. The Mississippi Department of Transportation and Department of Public Safety made the closure decision after a perfect storm of problems that left miles of drivers stranded on the interstates.
Interstate 55 is passable, as of Thursday afternoon, January 29. However, Interstate 22 remains closed in north Mississippi, according to MDOT.
Recovery from Mississippi's worst ice storm in more than 30 years could take a week or more. A coating of ice felled trees and downed power lines in a diagonal band from Vicksburg to the state's northeast corner.
At around 9 a.m. on Jan. 28, traffic is stopped on I-55 in both directions north of Grenada due to ice. Traffic on I-22 in both directions from the Mississippi state line to Myrtle (Union County) is also blocked, according to MDOT officials.
After a 1,000-yard junior season, 2027 receiver Darion Mosley continues to build momentum with Mississippi State as his decision window nears.
Four days after a major ice storm hit Mississippi, hundreds of trucks became stuck on Interstates Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
