Lubbock and much of the South Plains are under a winter weather advisory through 6 a.m. Friday, with additional snow accumulations of an inch or less and winds gusting as high as 40 mph expected, according to the National Weather Service in Lubbock.

With sleet and snow now falling in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, many of the school districts that were waiting to make a decision about Friday have now announced closures.

: As of 10:45 a.m., 50 districts have now closed. Only seven districts stayed with a two-hour delay. EARLIER: Some schools made announcements about Thursday morning delays as early as Wednesday evening due to the weather.

"All Austin ISD schools and offices will operate on normal schedules Thursday, Jan. 9, but due to rain and cold temperatures, all afterschool outdoor athletic activities will be canceled and any other outdoor activities will move indoors," Austin ISD wrote on Facebook.

Due to the threat of winter weather and possibility of unsafe road conditions Friday, several schools in central Alabama have announced they will be closed or having virtual learning. Some schools across the ABC13 viewing area are canceling and delaying classes for Friday due to the effects of Sunday's winter storm and more expected snow.
