Part of an astonishing generation of British actors, including Judi Dench,​ Vanessa Redgrave, Eileen Atkins and Maggie Smith​, Joan Plowright won a Tony Award, two Golden Globes and nominations for an Oscar and an Emmy.

Tony Award-winning actress Joan Plowright died on Jan. 16 at Denville Hall, a retirement home for actors in southern England. Plowright was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her death.

In a career spanning six decades, the British actor starred in Hollywood blockbusters and tread the boards in major theatres across the world. In the 1960s she married fellow screen star Sir Laurence Olivier who she remained with until his death.

LONDON -- Award-winning British actor Joan Plowright, who was one half of a theatrical power couple after marrying Laurence Olivier, has died. She was 95. In a statement Friday, her family said Plowright died the previous day at Denville Hall, a retirement home for actors in southern England, surrounded by her loved ones.
