Johnson, a native of Penngrove, California, was an accomplished sprint car racer prior to his life-altering accident during last year's Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway. The accident came shortly after Johnson had made his debut in the High Limit Racing series owned by NASCAR Cup Series star Kyle Larson.

Justin Haley had a quietly strong day at Sonoma Raceway, finishing 15th for his best result since May. But the race took a somber turn near the end. With 13 laps remaining during a caution period, Haley’s No. 7 car struck a rabbit that darted across the track. An incident he immediately radioed in.

The racer, identified by family as 30-year-old Chase Johnson, was injured in a confrontation while leaving the track with his partner.

The security guard then allegedly pushed Johnson backwards, hard enough to cause his wheelchair to flip. The shove caused Johnson to hit his head on the ground, briefly knocking him unconscious before the NASCAR medical team stepped in and took him to the medical center
