A tsunami has hit coastal areas of Russia's Kuril Islands and Japan's large northern island of Hokkaido after an 8.7-magnitude earthquake early on Wednesday. People were advised to move to higher ground in multiple locations, but places where tsunami waves have already washed ashore have reported no significant damage.

The earthquake was among the largest ever recorded in history. It was the strongest one since the 2011 earthquake in Japan.
