Williams was previously removed from the closer role earlier this year, as he lost the job to Luke Weaver. Freshly acquired reliever David Bednar pitched the eighth inning on Monday and could be in line to be the closer if Williams is indeed removed from the role.

Although both of the Yankees’ latest acquisitions (Bednar and Doval) did not fare well at their respective debuts, the expectation of them turning out as All-Star closers in the big leagues is still high. Williams, on the other hand, has a 5.01 ERA and was alienated from the closer’s role for some time, as reported by Newsweek.

Williams entered in a scoreless game in the eighth and gave up two runs to the Rangers. The Yankees managed only two hits.
