Just six days into the 2025 legislative session, Gov. Kay Ivey is putting pen to paper and signing the first bill to cross her desk into law.

“If the Good Lord made you a boy, you’re a boy. And if He made you a girl, you’re a girl,” Ivey said in a press release. “In Alabama, we believe there are two genders: Male and female. There is nothing complicated or controversial about it.

Alabama lawmakers on Wednesday gave final approval to legislation that would write definitions of male and female into state law that exclude transgender people from being recognized under their gender identity.
