AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Thursday he has ordered the deployment of more than 5,000 Texas National Guard troops, along with more than 2,000 state police, to help local law enforcement manage protests against President Donald Trump and the ongoing federal immigration raids.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom had a brief victory in his lawsuit against President Trump, but an appeals court quickly blocked a federal judge's order.
The Houston Chronicle, Texas's top selling newspaper, has published an editorial fiercely critical of Governor Greg Abbott over his rhetoric and decision to deploy Texas National Guard troops in response to protests against immigration enforcement, saying "we expect better of him."
At least 10 protests are planned across North Texas on Saturday. It comes as part of a national movement from people against the Trump administration and its policies.
