WEBSep 13, 2023 · Duke Dog made his first appearance as a cartoon and as a real bulldog in the 1972-73 school year. An early version of a Duke Dog student mascot appeared in 1972-73 but the mascot outfit similar to the one used today did not come into use until 1982-83.

WEBSep 13, 2023 · The original Duke Dog cartoon appeared on the cover of the 1972-73 basketball press guide and showed Duke Dog appearing among Coach Lou Campanelli's team. Later in the 1970s, an artist in the Madison publications department turned the cartoon into a snarling, fierce-looking bulldog.

Like the cartoon, the appearance of the real bulldog as a mascot was orchestrated by Dr. Ray V. Sonner, director of public affairs.

WEBOn November 28, 1982, Duke Dog appeared in JMU's first home game of the men's basketball season against the Virginia Military Institute. In 2004, Duke Dog was named a finalist for the Capital One Mascot Bowl. After eleven weeks of voting, Duke Dog won its matchup each week to finish a perfect 11–0.
